730 Days and Counting | Personal

April 1, 2012

730 days = 43, 800 minutes = 2 years

I am ecstatic to tell you that is the length of time I have been full-time self-employed.  What an amazing feeling!  Being owner and lead photographer at Jessica Barker Photography for the last 2 years has given me more than I can explain in words, but I’m going to try…

Presence – Being there, truly THERE, for Lily before and after school is priceless.

Flexibility – Setting my own schedule helps me be on-point for my business, my family and myself.  Yes, I still set an alarm, but it’s not as early as it once was!

Creative – I have always been creative in my work, but now it’s my JOB to create.

Independence – As a small business owner, there are definitely pros and cons, but there’s nothing that can hold a candle to being your own boss.

Peace – I am at peace in my career for the first time. The joy of getting up every day and doing what I love… it’s… indescribably awesome.

Gratitude – My friends, family, clients, artist peers and supporters are one of the reasons I have been successful.  I am forever grateful for your never-ending encouragement, love, resources, and referrals (!).

I look forward to many more years of creating beautiful photographs for families. Thank YOU for all that you have done and continue to do for my business and me.

Because a photographer’s blog post is never without a photograph, here is a photo of the main room of my new studio in St. Louis Park.  Watch for another blog post this week with more details!

Dan A. at the Studio | Hopkins Senior Portrait Photographer

June 8, 2010

I had the awesome opportunity to meet Dan A. for a quick and fun senior portrait session at the studio last week.  Dan is such a sweet boy!  His easy-going attitude made my job capturing wonderful photos of him very simple.  His mother, Amy, joined us for the session and is super fun to chat with.  Plus, she had some great ideas for poses to get Dan to look most natural.  Dan is headed to basic training this summer for the National Guard before starting his senior year at Maple Grove High School.  Good luck, Dan!  Here are some of my favorites from the session.

Words of Wisdom | Personal

May 4, 2010

I started my new job at First Day Photo this week and am loving it.

I met a family yesterday who just welcomed a baby boy into the world that morning and wanted photos taken. Baby’s grandfather and I were in the doorway while a nurse checked on the baby and I casually said, “An amazing day, huh?” He turned to me and said with all his heart, “To tell you the truth, I was diagnosed with cancer 6 years ago and I’m still here. Every day is an amazing day, but to experience this… ” He looked up thanking God or the universe or whatever spiritual being he believes in, then turned back to watch the goings on in the hospital room. Still looking at him, I nodded and realized that his eyes were filled with tears.

As if that wasn’t enough, I came home only to learn that a classmate of mine, Brian, passed away in a horrible and tragic car accident. Even though Brian and I weren’t close, his death has made me realize that every day truly is an amazing day.

I’m going to hug this little girl about 1,000,000 times when she gets home from school. 🙂

Birthday Party | Hugo Event Photographer

April 25, 2010

It was my pleasure to attend and capture photos for a wonderful family’s birthday party yesterday. The two birthday boys were rearing to go when I arrived. We had a lot of fun and I met some beautiful people. I am so blessed to have such wonderful friends and clients! Here is a collage of photos of the birthday boys. More to come!

Are you at peace? | Personal

April 14, 2010

Have you ever wondered what being at peace really means? How will you know when you’re at peace? Will a little man come up to with a sign with your name on it and say, “Ma’am, welcome to peace.”? Or will you not know until you are not at peace longingly remembering the time you were at peace?

Here’s a little story about me for those that may not know: I have often and for many years I thought peace was a place I would never get to visit. I have been on quite a roller coaster in the last several years – extreme happiness and extreme pain. On that ride I experienced my divorce, the purchase of my own home, family medical issues, the start of my photography business, and so many other amazing events. I made friends that will be lifelong, strengthened friendships and embraced my relationship with my family.

I can honestly tell you today, right here in my black tank top, turquoise blue track suit, no makeup, runny nose (darn allergies!) and bare feet, I am at peace. My wish for you today is be at peace – whatever that means to you, wherever you may be, however you look, however you feel, whomever is with you, whatever you’re doing.

Here’s a peaceful photo snapped during a brisk spring walk along the eastern coastline of North Carolina. The seemingly deserted fishing poles begged me to pay attention to their beauty.

Awwwww… Babies All day! | St. Louis Park Newborn Photographer

April 7, 2010

Yesterday was one of the best days since my Great Leap of Faith last Thursday. I had the amazing privilege of talking with Jessica Person, the CEO of First Day Photo, about joining her team of professional photographers.

First Day Photo is an emerging growth company headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The company was founded in 2003 in response to a growing need to provide studio-quality infant portraiture in a birth center environment and superior, dependable customer service to new parents as they celebrate the birth of their new baby.

I will be working at Methodist Hospital starting in mid-May. If you know of someone delivering at Methodist, let them know I’ll be stopping by to see them!

Beautiful, Sensual, Confident… | Boudoir

February 9, 2010

I had an absolutely amazing time during these boudoir sessions last month. My awesome clients (thank you, ladies!!!) have graciously given me permission to post some of the photos from that unforgettable Saturday night at the St. James Hotel in Red Wing, MN.

The Boardroom Suite was a perfect backdrop for boudoir photos. I added some scented candles, soothing music and, of course, champagne! I loved watching the ladies’ confidence grow as the session went on. I’m so glad I could show them truly how beautiful they really are.
